| Southmead - 25 vs. Saltash - 8 (Dec 8, EDF Vase Rd 5) Southmead 25 pts Saltash 8 pts Saltash bowed out of the EDF Junior Vase to a well organised Southmead side, who ruled the set piece play and denied Saltash any realistic scoring chances. Saltash still had the coach journey in their legs in the opening quarter, and by that stage Southmead had done their damage. The Cornish side were under the cosh from the first whistle and with a defensive 5 metre lineout, Southmead flanker Gary Spice intercepted and drove over the line for the try and a 5-0 lead. They extended the lead in the 12th minute with a well worked back-line move that put centre Anton Wellend in for the try, converted by fly half Rob Haddow. The visitors clawed their way back into the game, and Southmead added to the score with a 26th minute penalty from Haddow after Saltash were penalised at the ruck for not rolling away from the tackle area. At half time Southmead turned around 15-0 to the good. Saltash were now playing catch up rugby and put together some strong drives through the pack to be egged back by a clever and organised Southmead defence. It wasnt until the 60th minute that Saltash got on the board with a penalty from fly half Will Virgo to be cancelled out in the 67th minute by a Southmead penalty from Haddow for 18-3. The Bristol side sealed the victory with a series of drives up field through the pack, to spinthe ball wide out to the right where wing Mike McCormack dived over in the corner, for Haddow to slot the difficult conversion for a 25-3 lead with minutes left on the clock. The Cornwall One leaders had not given up and played right to the end and deep into injury time, a penalty close to the Southmead line saw a quick tap for skipper Pete Congo to drive over for the try. The conversion missed, Saltash had narrowed the gap but it was too little too late and Southmead are into the hat for the 6th round. |
EDF 2008
Southmead's Heroes fought till the bitter end but couldnt hold Chiswick off. We are out of the EDF finals but oh boy did we show em, After a slow start Chiswick stuck 10 points on us, Then all hell broke loose and we took the lead deep into the second half and at 13 - 10 it looked good, The crowd was amazing and made some serious noise, Then with minuites to go Chiswick took the chances to score two more trys and conversions which dealt a savage blow to our chances of making Twickers, lads did us proud, It was hard to swallow the loss after such a journey but we are seriously proud and honoured to be a part of this club, Well done Lads, its not every team that makes the final stages of this tournament, we were there though.
