History

hi there Meaders,

Do the names, Mickey Morris, Barry (Flaker) Jakes, Kay Marah, John Cockwell, Micky (Pinky) Pearce, Cotty, Lee Gardner, Mike Davis, Geoff Williams, Fish or Paul Goodman mean anything to you?

They are just a few of the people who helped launch this club from a good idea over 20 years ago, to the thriving respected team Southmead is today.

I started playing for Southmead some 20 years ago, now my 19 year old son Sam is playing. between us we should be able to tell a great story, So get those memories back and share them.

Id like to tell the club's story and include all the names and faces who put this club on the map.

I need your help for this, Send me as much info as you can, Who did what and when? I will then try put all this together on this website,

Founder member's honours list

As time allows, This section will be updated to give you a brief summary of our founder members story, I will be tracking down and asking the founding members to give me a little info for this section. If you would like to submit a tribute then please feel free.

GEOFF WILLIAMS, Life time President, and trusted friend.

He's not going to approve of this, but you have to know what made this club's heart beat like it does today. Our President, Has been part of this clubs history from the first day at the Mouse back in 1984, From that day on, this club has enjoyed the perks of having such a great friend as Geoff Williams.

These are just a few example's of what it takes to earn you place in the SRFC hall of fame,

Founder member, helped start the club.

Obtained £400 from the Prince's Trust through the police to kick start the mini/junior/colts teams.

Organised funding of £7500 from the sports and arts council, this was the funding organisation before the national lottery came in.

Thanks to Geoff we have being paying a lot less than the going rate for the pitches, clubhouse and utilities.

responsable for the original club registration to get the drinks licence, saving the club back then in 1986 £650.

Under the new licencing act 2003, Sorted all the applications saving the club at least £1100.

That set of shirts the first colts wore, The set we didnt ask where they came from!!!!!!!

Geoff’s ability to motivate everybody and bring the people of Southmead together was a skill only a few have, To convince the most untrusting to give us a chance, Geoff's Persuasive powers kept many of us on the park and out of the Sh!t, I and many Meader's hold Geoff in very high regard and forever in his debt for the efforts he made to keep a bunch of teenager on the pitch, and continues to be a credit to this Club, and long may he continue to do so.

1984

1984, the year the club was formed. Yes, 1984, The year Lee Gardner was thankfully inspired to talk the right people at the right time about an idea to create SRFC. I have just had a meeting with Geoff Williams and he has briefed me on the first meeting at the mouse in Westbury back in 84 and boy did these guys pull some strings to put Southmead on the rugby scene. When i finally remember to bring my pad to work will give you a ride through history, I plan to talk to all the original's that put this great club together. and believe me, from my first meeting with Geoff, Unless you where part of the formation and initial fundraising events that took place, YOU HAVE NO IDEA, there was simply nothing these guys wouldny do for this club.
