Southmead U14 vs. Dads 20/04/08
The Southmead lads started a momentous day in the sporting event calendar at Southmead rugby club a little differently today, it was decided to leave the lads to their own devices and from the outset the lads picked their own team practices to run through and coached themselves through the entire warm up and led their selves for the entire game
The first half started well, with good passing from all and hard tackles being put in, commiserations to Matty Hodge who ended on the wrong end of a double tackle by Steve ball and Dave Smith, Ben Dicks on of the superstar front row players even had the privilege of having his ear licked by Dave Smith, the dads scored two in the first half coming from well practiced moves, the second half saw Liam White score for the lads and Danny Allen converting, on of the coaching superstars mo ford also scored for the dads finishing up with a 17-7 win for the lads
This is not the end however all dads were hanging after the first half and it’s a good job the dads fought as hard as they did or they would be on the wrong end of a whipping for a second time in a row for the junior u14s, the wonder is how long the dads can use their size and experience to their advantage before the lads give them a proper defeat to moan about
Thank you to all who took part, the day was a roaring success
On a side note thank you to all the mums who pushed the scrum machine 100 metres across the pitch to raise fund for the changing room, and you the coaches who as great sports dressed to impress alongside the women

Under 14's lost to Aretions 59 - 12 but some excellant defence kept the score down,
the 1st try was scored by Ben Thomas and the 2nd by Ryan Waters.
Man of the Match was Dan Bawkett for his excellant defensive tackling.
Sunday 6th January 2008
Southmead 0 St Bernadettes 34
Southmead with an under strength side and only the bare 15
It looked like St Bernadettes where going to run away with the game after scoring 2 quick tries and Southmead tempers began to run high resulting in Ky Farley being sin binned, this only resulted in Southmed gritting there teeth and putting up some great defensive work to keep St Bernadettes to only 4 try's in the 1 st half.
The start of the 2nd half saw Danny Allen produce a smashing kick off resulting in a St Bernadettes error this then produced some excellent Southmead play and they came very close to scoring, the game then went from one end of the pitch to the other, some excellent line-out ball won by Ben Dicks kept driving Southmead forward, unfortunately St Bernadettes scored 2 more tries but this would have been a lot more except for the Southmead backs putting in some great defensive tackles, along with Ruben Hughes ,Ryan Holloway and man of the match Ryan (Mugsy) Waters. A special mention for Daniel Skuse who played the whole game despite an injury, and again Ben Dicks who looks a good prospect watch out Snakey and Scott
Rucking, scrummaging and mauling have improved every week and if the lads keep it up, it won't be long until there 1st win and Danny Brown the coach will have to get his haircut.

Vs Saracens Southmead 7-12 SaracensIt says something about others fear of Southmeads club, its reputation and its players when time and again they go up against older and more experienced teams in the juniors, Saras held no exceptions. From the kick off the rucks and mauls that were formed the majority of which went Southmeads way were fiercely contested, unfortunately a little fitness was the difference between a try and 5 metre scrum and Saracens went over for the first try, the first half stayed pretty much he same. At half time a lot of changes were made owing to this Saracens capitalised on a fresh side and managed to put another try on the board. With dogged determination Southmead pressed on against Saracens and managed to work their way up the field with help from Ben Dicks, Dan Skuse and Tyro Alleyne Hudson on heavy forward runs, good lineout work by Reuben Hughes and good back running from Liam White (MOTM), Matt Hodgekins, Danny Bowkett and forward support provided by the back row. Great defensive work from the team as a whole and good kick return under pressure from Martin Durnell along with a great run the that saw one of Saracens players out after being steamrolled allowed Southmead back in the game resulting in a try from Ky Farley who robbed a Saracens player on the line for the score conversion was made by Lewis Canella under the postsCome on the meadThe under 14s are a step closer to shaving their coaches headMatch report From daniel brown. chopperbrown7@hotmail.com |
10th Feb 08Southmead U14 vs. Aretians/ SaracensThe match today was played against two teams in round-robin tournamentVs Aretians Southmead 12 -19 aretiansSouthmead started extremely well forming a ruck from the kick off Southmeads forwards drove off aretians forwards and let Ryan Waters loose on the blind side to run in an quick try from this Danny Allen made the conversion in front the post, the game restarted and went backwards and forwards between the two teams Southmead put in great support play and defensive tackles but conceded one before the whistle. The second half went much the same as the first with a great run from Ben Dicks being stopped at aretians line, the Southmead back line used great passing along with forward support from the back row to push aretians line time and again finally the determination paid off and Ky Farley ran in a try. It showed that Southmead forming a stronger squad they stayed together and didn’t drop their heads although aretians ran in two further tries the game ended and Southmead though they has only just finished their game went straight into it against the next team |
3rd Feb 2008Southmead U14 v Clifton Aby Daniel BrownSouthmead fought hard considering they ahd a bare 15 squad with a few players playing out of position thanks go to tim white bower at full back and ryan waters for filling in at second row The first half was adogged affair with Southmead making their way slowly up the pitch against a vicious offensive onslaught from Clifton, unfortunately this onslaught finally weakened Southmead and forced more players intot he centre of the pitch around the rucks this left Clifton free to score on the fringes. But Clifton didn’t have it all their own way breakaway runs from ky farley and ben dicks making a dashes over half the pitch or more nearly resulted in two trys bens being denied when he ran into three opponents instead of going for the open wing ‘a Southmead forward in the making? And kys was snatched away from him when he received a high tackle missed by the referee a great driving maul and hard scrimmage also got Southmead near cliftons line The second half was a little different with Clifton punishing Southmead early for telegraphed line-out moves which gave Clifton a few more trys to add to their cushion, the last twenty minutes saw Southmead tighten up their defence thanks to great tackling by matthew hodgekins, martin durnell, liam white and ryan Holloway to deny Clifton any further trys. A special mention must go out to tom bleadon as after receiving his first dump tackle of his career he fought on making some great tackles and two great runs whereas many would of given up after being dumped on their neck, and to Jamie binsley for two good catches on the wing sadly resulting in him being munched but gladly denying Clifton the trys. Final score Southmead 0 – 42 clifton |
13th January 2008Southmead v AvonmouthAfter last weeks performance Southmead may have gone into the game with a bit too much confidence, Southmead started well with some great high kicks from Danny Allen, the pack did not start too well losing their 1st 2 scrums, and some costly errors let Avonmouth build a healthy points cushion, this would have been a lot higher if not for the defensive tackling of man of the match Liam White, Dan Bowkett and Martin Durnell. Some great lineout work between Ben Dicks And Ryan Waters meant Southmead dominated the line outs but they just couldn't get inside Avonmouth's 22. The 2nd half for the 1st 10 minutes went Avonmouth's way and then the game turned in Southmead favour with Ben dicks scoring Southmead's 1st try, later in the game Tim White -Bower produced a try saving tacking and then some excellent kicking from Danny Allen and Martin Durnell lead to the final try of the game for Ryan Waters, this is kept up Ryan's record of scoring a try in ever game Southmead have scored in, Danny Allan converted the try. |
18th Feb 08
Southmead 20 – 10 Whitehall 1st WIN
Off the back of two impressive games last week Southmead U14s went away missing two of their stronger players
The first half started well with another early Southmead try courtesy of Ben Dicks hammering up the field supported by his usual gang of Forwards including Dan Skuse and Tyro Alleyne-Hudson his front row buddies, Danny Allen unfortunately missed his conversion due to the lack of a kicking tee and a hard angle from the wing. The restart saw Whitehall regain some possession and turn the tables on Southmead with a try of their own which caught the Backs napping whitehall missed the kick and the game was levelled. A lot of play down the centre of the pitch ensured all players got involved in some heavy rucking and mauling and the back line making their share of tackles and breaking runs thanks to good passing play between Dan Bowkett, Liam White and Matt Hodgekins (MOTM), on the other wing Tim white-bower made a good job of holding up the opposition until the forwards arrived and wiped out. From this Tom Farley managed to run into and out of trouble in one run scoring his first try for the team to put Southmead ahead. Going into the second half Southmead were riding high and a forward march up the pitch saw Ryan Holloway dive over the line for a 3rd try Southmeads way, Whitehall gave it their all to come back with another try. The last half of the second half it seemed that nothing could stop Southmeads good breaking and passing putting players in for opportunities time and again the best of these came when Ryan Waters broke and passed to Ben Thomas who made a fantastic run and diving try only for it to be disallowed for his foot being in touch (never he was in), the last ten saw Jamie Billingsley replaced for Tim White-Bower ('cus everyone gets a go!) and the Forwards had three successive scrums on Whitehall’s 5 metre line, from this 3 attempted pushover tries were unsuccessful due to Whitehall’s dogged defence and their big number 12, finally back at the half way line Ben Dicks decided it was time for another try and up took the ball and ran the to the opposition line supported by Reuben Hughes and Tom Bleadon, time and again Ben ran into trouble but still managed to wrestle his way out for a try, the score finished 20-10 to Southmead
Final score Southmead 20 – 10 Whitehall

Tom Bleadon has broken his thumb thanks go to tom bleadon for a spectacular game last sunday, a hard game for our smallest player but he still held his own against the oppositions bigger lads unfortunately tom managed to break his thumb and is currently in hospital having treatment, he played on through the game with the broken thumb and managed the celebrations in the clubhouse also, and he didnt tell anyone until monday morning (only wanted a day off school) Danny Brown on behalf of the junior section |
Southmead U14s 28 vs. Cotham Park 10 2nd WIN Due to a few injuries Southmead went into this game missing their star fullback, a small but deadly flanker and a good lock, despite this Southmead still managed to field a full side plus a substitute which goes to show how Southmead are gaining numbers for the coming seasons. The first half went well with two tries run in from over half the field almost consecutively, the big break runners were Ky Farley and Tom Farley matching as a sibling pair at the back of the scrum, although the scores were quick and Danny Allen converted one of the tries, Southmead didn’t have the game all their own way. Good hooking as oppose to scrummaging from Cotham meant they came out with the ball as many times on their own put in as they did against the head, it was only Ben Thomas sacking the scrum half (a habit he’s making for himself) and Ryan Holloway on the blind that stopped Cotham capitalising on these chances. Cotham also dominated the majority of rucks due to the Southmead forwards bad positioning and drive. Throughout the half chances came close from Matt Hodgekins and Liam White who both narrowly missed out on tries quite a few times. In the last 10 of the first half Ben Dicks turnt the engine on and roared up the field again running into trouble instead of space to make it over the line for Southmeads third try with Danny Allen converting In the second half Southmead got off to a shaky start due in no small part to a number of position changes at ½ time, this allowed Cotham in for their first try with a succession of rucks driven to the line, later in the half Southmead came back with more break running courtesy of Ky Farley. Cotham again put a try in with a good back line run to get into the corner. Southmead finished the game with a pushover try from a ruck that broke down just in front of Cothams tryline, this came courtesy of Tyro Alleyne-Hudson (MOTM) who was great throughout with his support work. Plenty of hard tackles went in from both sides and more than a few times one player or another ended up ‘up ended’ from crashing tackles, both sides put in a good performance and both stuck at the game to the end Well done the mead 2 in a row 24/Feb/08
