Latest News From Mike Pearce. regaurding fund raising.

The Southmead Rugby Football Club is a family club providing light relief from the many less attractive issues and problems the community faces.  It is a vital piece in a jigsaw made up of numerous other voluntary and statutory organisations that have brought about a growing resurgence in the Southmead area.  Since its beginning in 1986, the club has fought extremely hard to not only survive but consolidate and expand its efforts to remain a part of that jigsaw and has proven to be a healthy deterrent – particularly to vulnerable young people.

Part of that jigsaw is the club’s capacity to help others. This is perhaps best illustrated by an event which took place on Sunday March the 23rd 08 to raise money for the Bristol leukaemia ward.  This followed the death of a child from the local area after suffering this illness.

Whilst the club itself is working extremely hard to find the necessary finance to complete the construction of new changing facilities, it nonetheless turned its attention to helping raise much needed finance for the leukaemia cause.  Over £5,000 was been raised!

This example of the kindred spirit of a club based in a community that often suffers less desirable press is just one of the many reasons why Southmead is such a great place to be.

The original team changing facility has been demolished by the landlords – Southmead Development Trust – in order for the trust to complete necessary refurbishments which do not include a dedicated changing area.  This has meant the club will have no future changing facilities.  Meanwhile they are leasing temporary changing rooms and working closely with the Rugby Football Union and others to design and produce plans for new changing rooms and to raise the necessary funds with which to do the work.  Construction is earmarked to start early spring 2008.

Until work on the new changing area is completed, the club faces bills of £1,600 every month for use of temporary changing rooms.  This undoubtedly is an unwelcome drain on its already meagre resources.  The season ends in April 2008 although the club is normally active beyond that date accommodating touring teams and the like.

Whilst a good deal of money has already been promised toward construction costs including a grant from the RFU and agreed loans from a brewery, there is a shortfall of £30,000 which the club is desperate to overcome.  This includes the cost of hire of temporary changing rooms.

This plea is to those who may either be from the area and have perhaps made good, or those who see the value of having such an effective piece of a jigsaw like Southmead RFC operating in areas like Southmead.

Financial help is what the club needs and this appeal is being launched with the aim of making up the shortfall.  If you feel you could put your hand in your pocket and make a contribution – however small - for such a worthy cause do please contact me on 0117 9506022 or e-mail me at southmead_project@yahoo.co.uk  Alternatively, cheques/postal orders can be made payable to Southmead Rugby Club and forwarded to Mike Peirce at the Southmead Project, 165 Greystoke Avenue, Southmead, Bristol BS10 6AS.
